Meshwiki : what and why

During a power outage, traditional communication infrastructure can come to a standstill: mobile networks fail when cell towers lose power, and cable- or fiber-based internet services do not work without electricity.

Mesh networks offer a solution. Devices communicate directly with each other and together form a network without central infrastructure. Messages, as it were, hop from one device to another until they reach their destination.

Because of this, Waag Futurelab has started the pilot NodeNet. In the pilot NodeNet: Meshnetworks for Emergency Communication, Waag researches the feasibility of mesh network technologies in collaboration with the municipality of Amsterdam, based on a set-up of thirty nodes under the management of Amsterdammers.
